What the RUNVAN® Development Fund Is
RUNVAN® Development Fund, launched in October 2015, brings accessible sports and assistance to aspiring elite runners, youth, and those who face barriers to participating in running in Vancouver and throughout Canada.
A fund of the True Sport Foundation, the RUNVAN® Development Fund enables supporters of the Vancouver International Marathon Society to donate to – or fundraise for – programs offered by the Society that are aligned with our commitment to the True Sport Principles.
The Vancouver International Marathon Society is the first sport organization in British Columbia to establish a fund in partnership with the True Sport Foundation. The True Sport Foundation will issue tax receipts for donations to the RUNVAN® Development Fund.
Why Support RUNVAN®?
By supporting the RUNVAN® Development Fund, you support professional, hobby and young runners across the country through initiatives that include:
- Starting and/or supporting FREE youth running initiatives with a focus on creating fun and social running experiences that encourage healthy living and an active lifestyle.
- Reducing economic, social, physical or other barriers to running events by providing access to clothing, shoes, training clinics, information seminars, race entries, running friendships and/or financial support to those most in need.
- Supporting aspiring Canadian elite runners continue their quest to the podium. Funds will be used to offset athlete travel, accommodation, and race entries.
- Advancing values-based and principle-driven sport in British Columbia
Each of our endeavors is grounded in a deeply rooted commitment to excellence and continued improvement. We believe in collaborating with our community members to encourage healthy living and running participation across all levels of ability.
Supporting Runners and Healthier Communities
The Society aims to foster the growth of healthy, active communities in British Columbia and across Canada by offering accessible running events that encourage year-round training, goal setting and healthful habits.
Our annual events are for runners from all walks of life. Whether it’s the marquee BMO Vancouver Marathon, the the festive Granville Island Turkey Trot or Fall Classic Run at UBC, the Society engages runners of varied skill level, caters to ages 5 and over, and welcomes up to 20,000 participants each year.
Our community events are fun, and open to the public. Among many local initiatives, the Society trains and supports more than 4,000 volunteers in rewarding roles annually; helps Run4Hope participants raise more than $14 million in charitable donations to-date; and engages community members to cheer for and encourage runners in Neighbourhood Cheer Awards. The Society works closely with business owners, City officials, and community leaders to achieve a demonstrated positive impact since its inaugural year in 1987.
The RUNVAN® Development Fund advances this work, allowing the Society to expand current programming to access more and different individuals and groups including elite athletes, youth in-need and those with barriers to running.
History of the Vancouver International Marathon Society
The Vancouver International Marathon Society is the non-profit responsible for the BMO Vancouver Marathon, Granville Island Turkey Trot, and Fall Classic races. As a volunteer-based running event organization, the Society promotes healthy living and advances the sport with assistance from a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, nearly 4,000 additional volunteers and a small staff team.
One of Canada’s most historic race organizations, the Society traces its roots back to 1972 – when a team of volunteers coordinated the first Vancouver International Marathon inside Stanley Park for just 36 runners – and celebrated its official inaugural year in 1986, when a small group of committed volunteers formed the Vancouver International Marathon Society. Now, the Society continues to represent Vancouver on the international running scene with the BMO Vancouver Marathon: the city’s only marathon, one of the largest marathons in Canada, and one of most scenic destination marathons in the world.
Tax Receipt Info
All tax receipts are issued by the True Sport Foundation. Runners who donate to the RUNVAN® Development Fund as part of their registration process will receive a tax receipt after their race or event. All other donors will receive tax receipts soon after funds are processed, usually within two weeks after a donation.
