B.C. Vaccine Cards and Masking
Proof of vaccination and masks required for Fall 2021 Races
RUNVAN® is requiring proof of vaccination and masks for its Fall 2021 Races. Runners will be required to produce the B.C. Vaccine Card showing proof of double vaccination for this year’s Granville Island Turkey Trot, October 11, and Great Trek, October 23, 2021, and wear masks during select times. Virtual Race participants will not be required to show proof of vaccination or wear masks.
RUNVAN® introduces this new in-person event policy following the province’s announcement that individuals are be required to show proof of vaccination to access a broad range of social, recreational, and discretionary events in B.C, as of September 13, 2021, continued through at least January 31, 2022.
Provincial health orders state masks are mandatory again in public indoor spaces throughout the province, and where physical distancing may not be possible. As such, masks will now also be mandatory during RUNVAN®’s upcoming Fall events during Package Pickup, in the Start Line and Finish Line areas and within all indoor venues. Masks may be removed when racing outside and should carried by the runner.
Performance Works on Granville Island and the University of BC, where the Granville Island Turkey Trot and Great Trek respectively take place, will also require proof of vaccination and masking at their indoor venues.
The event’s chief medical officer and Rockdoc, the official medical team for RUNVAN® events, have advised the non-profit organizers to adhere to these noted health and safety protocols. The double vaccination policy aligns with best practices being administered by other large events. Athletics Canada has similarly announced that everyone over the age of 12 who is participating in Athletics Canada events must be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.
The B.C. government is implementing the new vaccine passport program and mask mandates to manage the latest surge in COVID-19 cases. “Getting vaccinated is the way forward through the pandemic,” added B.C. premier John Horgan, alongside provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, during a news conference announcing the overall B.C. Vaccine Card requirements.

RUNVAN® will additionally accept alternative vaccine verifications as approved by the Province and Health Canada. Participants from other Canadian provinces or territories must show their provincially/territorially officially recognized vaccine record and valid government photo ID, while any international participants must show the proof of vaccination they used to enter Canada and their passport.
Runners will be requested to acknowledge this change in policy during online registration, and they will be required to show their proof of vaccination alongside valid government photo ID at Package Pickup in order to collect their race bibs.
RUNVAN® volunteers will similarly have to show proof of double vaccinations and adhere to the mask mandates.
Anyone who is sick or showing symptoms of COVID-19 is requested to avoid event participation for the safety of others, and to contact the event organizers for deferral options. Please continue to be respectful of others.

Safety continues to be the top priority for event organizers, and RUNVAN® has updated its traditional race offerings to support the return of in-person races for this year’s Fall events. To support physical distancing, in-person races may feature additional corrals, additional start waves, and include an increase in overall spacing requirements within staged areas. Participants will also have access to sanitation stations at multiple locations near package pickup, the Start Line area, Finish Line area, and indoor venues.
Indoor space and post-race festivities race day will be limited or removed. To help reduce congestion and increase physical distancing, race day package pickup has also been removed, however, participants will have an increased number of days to visit package pickup prior to race day. Proxy pickup will also be available with the appropriate documentation, allowing others to pickup on the behalf of a registered runner.
Water stations on-course for the Fall 2021 races will be limited to one location, to again reduce the potential spread of any diseases. Runners are encouraged to be self-sufficient where possible and to bring their own hydration as appropriate. Masks will now also be mandatory at Package Pickup, the Start Line area, Finish Line area, and indoor venues. For the purposes of the provincial order, a mask or face covering is defined as a medical or non-medical mask that covers the nose and mouth. Face shields and race wraps are not a substitute for a mask. Please bring your own mask.
Event organizers will continue to closely monitor all health guidelines and follow the appropriate regulations. Event details are always subject to change, as permits are subject to the approval from governing bodies. RUNVAN® has various event plans that will be adjusted according to the official guidelines of the Provincial Health Officer, City of Vancouver, and Vancouver Parks Board, to support the return of in-person racing. Participant safety is always a top priority.
Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable
Event organizers will make every effort to organize in-person races for registered runners. Should organizers be forced to cancel the in-person event altogether, the RUNVAN® deferral policy will be applicable. Deferral will include entry into this year’s Virtual Race, race swag, plus a partial discount into 2022, 2023 or 2024.
Refunds are not provided per race policies agreed to upon registration. Event funds are often spent well in advance of race day per traditional ordering timelines and supplier terms, and registration can’t simply be returned. RUNVAN® invests in marketing, has fixed operational costs, plus makes large advance purchases. Since that product is ordered months in advance, refunds on products like medals and giveaways are unavailable. Registrants will still have an opportunity to complete the Virtual Race and collect their commemorative rewards.
