Press Release
The Jerome Classic this Saturday at Swangard Stadium is an opportunity to gain selection to the Paris Olympic Games just 6 weeks away. Athletes from 30 countries representing Europe, Africa, Oceana, Asia, Caribbean, North and South America will travel to The Jerome Classic to move up their World Athletic ranking position.
The women’s 1500m will produce such an opportunity for an international field where the Olympic standard of 4:02.50 will be a target for New Zealand’s Maia Ramsden. This Harvard student won the NCAA championships in Eugene last weekend with 4:06.62. She defended the NCAA crown she won in 2023 in Austin, TX with a time of 4:08.60. Maia ran in the Los Angles Grand Prix on May 18 in 4:02.58 just 0.08 seconds shy of the Olympic standard. The New Zealand Olympic Committee relies on a nomination panel to determine their Olympic team.
Maia will need to convince their nominating panel that he is capable of finishing in the top 16 in Paris.
Ramsden will be be joined by Canada’s Ceili McCabe and Kate Current who will be aiming to improve their personal bests. Vancouver’s Ceili has run the Olympic standard the 3000m steeplechase and is expected to be name on Canada’s Olympic team following the Montreal Olympic Trials on June 30th.
