DIANE CLEMENT

Diane Clement, a respected figure in Canadian athletics and sports leadership, made lasting contributions alongside her husband, Doug Clement, in shaping Vancouver’s running community. Together, they co-founded the Achilles Track and Field Society in 1962, offering athletes the chance to compete internationally, as well as organizing the annual Harry Jerome International Track Classic, one of North America’s premier track meets. Their shared vision led to the creation of the Vancouver Sun Run in 1985, which has grown into one of the largest timed 10 km races globally.

Serving as the first female president of Athletics Canada from 1973 to 1976, Diane was among the first women to lead a national sports federation globally. Her athletic achievements include representing Canada in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100 meter relay at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and earning a bronze medal at the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales.

Her significant impact has been recognized with numerous accolades, including inductions into halls of fame, alongside her husband Doug, and she was awarded the Order of Canada. Together, they revolutionized Vancouver’s running scene and left an indelible mark on the city’s athletic community.
