DON BASHAM

Don Basham was a pivotal figure in the development of Vancouver’s running community, co-founding the Vancouver International Marathon in 1972. Originally a small race with only 32 participants, including two women, the marathon took place on a five-lap course around Stanley Park. As race director for the first 16 years, Basham’s vision helped grow the event beyond its modest origins. One of his key achievements was leading the transition of the marathon from being confined to Stanley Park to a much larger course through the streets of Vancouver. This move not only allowed the race to grow in size and scope but also showcased the city’s vibrant neighborhoods, waterfront, and surrounding mountains. The new urban route helped attract international runners and solidified the marathon’s status as a premier event.

Under his leadership, the marathon became a significant international event, contributing to Vancouver’s reputation as a destination for marathon runners. Basham’s efforts in expanding the course, attracting participants from around the world, and fostering a strong local running community left a lasting impact on the city’s running culture. His legacy continues to inspire the local running community, and his role in shaping the BMO Vancouver Marathon helped build the foundation for its continued success.
