Running with a friend can be an absolute game changer for runners preparing for any distance at the BMO Vancouver Marathon. This is a great way to improve your running routine, stay motivated, or make running and workouts more enjoyable.

Honestly, running can sometimes be a tedious activity, and especially challenging on dreary days. Having a running buddy is one foolproof way to keep yourself accountable. If you’re looking for a running partner, check out local run clubs in Vancouver to find like-minded runners. Whether you run together in person, or check-in after, having someone keeping you accountable makes you much more motivated to get out the door. And as we know, getting out the door is sometimes the hardest part!

Running towards a shared goal can also be incredibly motivating. Although the end goal may be one of the distances at the BMO Vancouver Marathon, it may also be a fitness challenge along the way! Doesn’t matter! Working together, and pushing one another to keep going can be helpful. Research shows that social connections in physical activity make you more likely to persist through challenges as you’re encouraged to keep up with your partner.

Finding a running buddy who’s targeting a similar pace can also enhance performance. Together, you maintain consistent pacing and can help each other tackle difficult workouts. A little friendly competition can assist in boosting endurance and speed. Plus, lining up for a race with a similar pace goal can be extra motivation and assist with those nasty pre-race nerves.

In my opinion, social connection while running also cannot be beat. I was on a trail run with a few friends and I noticed all of us were just being incredibly honest with one another in regards to life goals, career aspirations, relationships, etc. At the time I didn’t think too much of it, but later someone (who I find is very wise) told me that they are much more likely to open up while on a long run, than over a coffee. I will be the first to admit that I think he’s got a point. Opening up over KM’s can positively affect your mental well-being, reducing stress, and increasing enjoyment, and making running a rewarding social activity as much as a physical one.

Safety is another reason that running buddies are crucial. Running alone, especially on trails or in unfamiliar areas, can come with safety concerns. Running with a buddy provides extra security in case of an injury or emergency. This can give you peace of mind to focus on your workout rather than potential safety risks. If you can’t run with someone and you want to go explore a new area, it’s always a good idea to let someone know where you’re headed!

Finally; Goal Sharing and Celebration. Achieving milestones is much more rewarding when there is someone there who truly understands the effort it took. A milestone can be as simple as completing a challenging run, hitting a PR, or simply sticking to a training plan. Having a buddy to celebrate these wins can amplify the joy and make the accomplishment feel even more meaningful.
